Giant Tortoises and Turtles in Madagascar

Madagascar is home to around 50 species of Skink (Scincidae Family). 4 species of Tortoises (Testudinidae) exist in Madagascar today. Some of these species are among the rarest in the world and all endemic. The best known and largest is the Plowshare tortoise or Angonoka (Geochelone yniphora). The island also has 4 turtle species, one of which is endemic.
