Madagascar's Spiny Forest

The spiny forest is Madagascar's most unusual vegetation zone. Found in the southwest coast of the country, the spiny forest is uniquely adapted to withstand the extreme arid conditions of this region. Trees in the spiny forest are covered with spines, have bizarre leaves, and bulbous trunks. The spiny forest is one of the most threatened ecosystems in Madagascar as it is cleared for charcoal production.

A sampling of mammal species found in the spiny forest of Madagascar:
Grey mouse lemur Microcebus murinus
White-footed sportive lemur Lepilemur leucopus
Ring-tailed lemur Lemur catta
Verreaux's sifaka Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi
Lesser hedgehog tenrec Echinops telfairi
Large-eared tenrec Geogale aurita
