Nosy Mangabe, Madagascar

Nosy Mangabe is an island located in the Gulf of Antongil near the Masoala Peninsula. It is famous for its aye-aye lemurs which were introduced during the 1960s in an effort to save the species from what was thought to be its imminent extinction. Since then scientists have learned that aye-ayes have a much wider distribution than initially believed.

On Nosy Mangabe you may encounter the remarkable Uroplatus leaf-tailed geckos along with chameleons and colorful Mantella frogs. Other notable wildlife found on the island include the black and white ruffed lemur and the white-fronted brown lemur.

Watch for sharks if you plan to swim.
